Shell Cove Waste Cell Update

- Marina scheduled for completion in 2011
Summary
Construction is almost complete on the first phase of the Shell Cove boatharbour and marina, with work nearing completion on the removal of the former rubbish tip that is a major part of the area to be excavated for the new boating facility. Relocating years of decomposing garbage into a more manageable environment has also created areas for new sporting fields. The fields will be state of the art and constructed to a similar standard to the fields at Myimbarr Wetlands.
Cleary Brothers won the contract to remove 150,000 cubic metres of material from the site adjacent to Boollwarroo Parade, which was used as a rubbish tip from the 1950s to the 1970s, and transfer it to a modern landfill site.
Breakwater construction and other earthworks will commence later this year followed by final excavation and dredging, with the marina scheduled for completion in 2011.
Being developed by Shellharbour City Council and Australand, Shell Cove will be a showpiece residential and tourism precinct. The boatharbour and marina for more than 300 boats will also eventually include an international hotel and shopping and commercial precinct, while there will be over 3,000 residential dwellings by the time Shell Cove is complete.
