Shell Cove Waste Cell
- Relocation of 150,000 cubic metres of waste
- Marina project on hold
Summary
Construction is complete on the first phase of the Shell Cove boat harbour and marina, which has been postponed by Shellharbour Council. Work is completed on the removal of the former rubbish tip that is a major part of the area to be excavated for the new boating facility. Relocating years of decomposing garbage into a more manageable environment has also created areas for new sporting fields. The fields will be state of the art and constructed to a similar standard to the fields at Myimbarr Wetlands.
Cleary Bros won the contract to remove 150,000 cubic metres of material from the site adjacent to Boollwarroo Parade, which was used as a rubbish tip from the 1950s to the 1970s, and transfer it to a modern landfill site.
Being developed by Shellharbour City Council and Australand, Shell Cove will be a showpiece residential and tourism precinct. The boat harbour and marina is expected to cater for more than 300 boats with plans included for an international hotel, retail and commercial precinct, while there will be over 3,000 residential dwellings by the time Shell Cove is complete.
